Westquay today showed their support for our bid to become UK City of Culture 2025 by signing up to be our first official Seasonal Partner. An important part of the local community, the popular local retail and leisure destination will create awareness for the bid throughout the summer by hosting a programme of free events and activities for visitors to enjoy, both in the centre and on The Esplanade.
A key aim of the partnership will be to promote everyday culture such as food, retail, cinema, music and public art to centre users, bringing to life the many opportunities that bidding to be UK City of Culture presents.
Bid Director, Claire Whitaker OBE said “Our partnership with Westquay will help us promote everyday culture to our city centre. Culture offers something for everyone and is much wider than we think; activities such as retail, music and food are all activities that form part of Southampton’s diverse cultural offering. I’m really looking forward to seeing our communities enjoy the benefits of our new partnership, especially Westquay’s exciting and memorable events and initiatives for all ages across the summer”.
Westquay Manager, Laura Read said “Westquay sits at the heart of Southampton, and has always been a place for friends and family to connect. Becoming the UK City of Culture would be a huge achievement for Southampton and an exciting first step as we return to some kind of normal post lockdown. I’m proud that Westquay will be the bid’s first Seasonal Partner. We have a strong track record of delivering engaging and memorable events on The Esplanade and we have a whole programme of exciting initiatives for the summer.”
