Creating a National Collection

Date

12 Jun, 2021

On 27th May the city celebrated its long-standing relationship with the National Gallery with the opening of a must-see exhibition at the City Art Gallery, Creating a National Collection.

The exhibition features works by Monet, Gainsborough, Maggi Hambling and Paula Rego, and explores the historical links between the two galleries, a unique collaboration that goes back to 1911. Southampton resident and Curatorial Trainee, Jemma Craig, has led on a project to explore this dynamic and ongoing relationship as part of the National Gallery Curatorial Traineeship programme. The exhibition will run until 4 September. Admission is free but tickets must be pre-booked.

This partnership highlights the importance of culture, and its role in the history of Southampton. It is a great example of why we’re bidding to be UK City of Culture, to create opportunities for young people, make change and boost the local economy.
