Southampton is a pioneer and innovator of the UK’s tech industry, so we are delighted to welcome Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Professor of Computer Science and Executive Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton to our list of ambassadors.

Dame Hall was one of the first computer scientists to undertake serious research in multimedia and hypermedia, and she has been at its forefront ever since. She is well known for her development of the Microcosm hypermedia system in the mid-1980s, which was a forerunner to the World Wide Web.

“I never dreamt that I would end up being a professor at the University of Southampton and a Dame Commander of the British Empire and all the things that have happened to me – because I came to Southampton…it would be fantastic for Southampton to be UK City of Culture 2025, the gateway to the world.”
