Bargate Monument Illuminated to Support Southampton’s Bid to Become UK City of Culture 2025

Date

31 Jan, 2022

On Monday 31st January, the Bargate monument was illuminated in the city of Southampton’s iconic red and white to mark Southampton’s final bid submission later the same week.

The Bargate is a Grade I listed medieval gatehouse. It was constructed in Norman times as part of the Southampton town walls and was the main gateway to the city.

Over its time it has been an art gallery, performance space and rumoured to have been a rehearsal space for William Shakespeare. Given its past and as Southampton moves into its future, it was fitting that this iconic, historic monument in the heart of the city centre was illuminated to mark the occasion.

The illumination stopped people in their tracks and resulted in a great wave of good luck messages and support on social media channels for the bid.
